چکیده

The development of a liquid fueled mesoscale catalytic combustor is presented, based on the coupling of multiplexed electrosprays for liquid fuel dispersion and a stack of catalytic grids. The grids act as a compact catalytic reactor for combustion initiation, stabilization and enhanced conversion, as well as ground electrodes for the electrospray. The combustor has a volume on the order of few cm and operates on various fuels, including JP8 jet fuel, which is electrosprayed at a flow rate on the order of 10 g/h and equivalence ratios varying from 0.35 to 0.70. Temperatures in the range 900–1300 K are achieved with a ±5% uniformity over the top circular surface of the burner. Using gas chromatographic analysis of the exhaust gases, a combustion efficiency in excess of 97% is estimated. This estimate was confirmed by exhaust gas composition measurements by photoionization mass spectrometry for operation with dodecane, the most abundant component of JP8. These measurements showed that alkenes and aldehydes are the major hydrocarbon products and that there is no significant molecular growth chemistry. The capability of the system to burn cleanly and efficiently even notoriously polluting fuels was demonstrated. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Reformer Gas Application in Combustion Onset Control of HCCI Engine

Homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is spontaneous multi-site combustion of a nominally premixed air/fuel mixture that exhibits high rate of pressure rise and short combustion duration. To avoid excessive pressure rise rate and knocking, HCCI engines are fueled with highly diluted mixture using a combination of excess air and/or EGR. HCCI combustion is attractive due to ...

Effect of Initial Temperature and EGR on Combustion and Performance Characteristics of Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Dimethyl Ether

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a pioneer method of combustion in which pre-mixed fuel and oxidizer (typically air) are compressed to the point of auto-ignition. HCCI engines can operate with most alternative fuels, especially, dimethyl ether (DME) which has been tested as a possible diesel fuel due to its simultaneously low NOx and PM emissions. In this paper a ...

Simulation Studies Of Premixed N-Pentane/Air Liquid Micro Combustion

With latest improvements in MEMS, combustion based Micro-Power generation devices are seen as alternatives for conventional batteries because of the high energy densities of Hydrogen and other hydrocarbon fuels. An important feature of micro-power system is to utilize the combustion of fuel or propellant in the micro-burner to produce the gas with high temperature and high pressure to drive tur...

Investigation and Modeling of Combustion instabilities in Aero Engines

Combustion instability results from a coupling between acoustic and heat release fluctuations. From the analysis of published works by various research teams including ONERA, this paper describes the coupling lines involved, the model used to describe it and the methods developed to predict the thermo-acoustic risks. The application is focused on the liquid-fueled aero engine specificities. Rec...
